Women Politicians Making Waves In 2025
As efforts to roll back Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives continue across the United States, a group of ten inspiring Black female politicians emerges as a beacon of hope for a brighter future. Despite the disappointment of not seeing 49th U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris elected as commander in chief last November, we find encouragement in the historic achievements of figures such as Sen. Angela Alsobrooks and Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester—who proudly became the first two Black women to be elected to the Senate simultaneously. Alongside them stands Texas congresswoman and progressive advocate Rep. Jasmine Crockett, and the judiciary’s trailblazer, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.
Sen. Angela Alsobrooks

Making waves as the first Black U.S. Senator from Maryland, Senator Angela Alsobrooks is a steadfast champion for social justice. Her legislative agenda tackles the pressing issues of skyrocketing housing costs and deportation, while passionately advocating for the preservation of abortion rights. This accomplished politician and seasoned lawyer was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2024, marking a pivotal moment in history alongside her fellow Democrat, Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett

With a fierce dedication to her constituents and an unyielding critique of the Trump Administration, Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas has quickly distinguished herself as a prominent voice for progressive change. Her journey from serving as the national co-chair of the Harris-Walz campaign to orchestrating a dramatic Democratic walkout during Trump’s controversial speech underscores her commitment to standing up for her beliefs and challenging the status quo.
Mayor Alyia Gaskins

Stepping into her role as the first Black woman mayor of Alexandria, Virginia, in January, Mayor Alyia Gaskins is set on transforming her community. Her priorities include expanding affordable housing and enhancing health resources for residents, addressing critical needs within her city. In the wake of a tragic plane collision near Reagan National Airport, Mayor Gaskins delivered poignant remarks at a local vigil honoring the 67 lives lost, demonstrating her compassion and leadership in times of crisis.
